About Wasit
Wasit province is named after the ancient city of Wasit, founded in 702 AD by the Umayyad governor Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf. The region has been an important center of Islamic civilization and contains numerous archaeological sites. Kut, the modern capital, sits on the Tigris River and serves as an important agricultural center.
